Search Engine for Source Code

The tool, known as Krugle, is all set to make a difference in Search domain. Till now developers use Google, Yahoo etc. search engines to search for source code which we all know is not too convincing search. Krugle is a search engine for source code and code-related information. It is designed to deliver easy access to source code and other highly relevant technical information in a single, convenient, clean, easy-to-use interface. Here are some of the features Krugle is aiming to focus on:

Search Code: It supports code search by crawling, parsing and indexing code that is found mainly in open source repositories along with code existing in archives, mailing lists, blogs, web pages etc. It is also going to provide ability to interactively browse and explore code in a context. It will also trap the relation of one file to another along with API calls.

Ask Krugle: It is also planning to provide answers to code-related technical questions, including information about related code, dependencies, licensing information, compatibility requirements, bug reports and news group postings.

Save Search: Saving the searched code for future reference. It also aim to let user add own comments to entire code files or specific lines of code.

Looking at the Krugle preview, I feel that Search engines too are specializing with more stress on categorized search. Few things that I am still wondering about Krugle are :

  • How is it different from other code search engines like www.koders.com etc.?
  • Is Krugle going to provide free plugins for IDE,s like koders does?
  • Are all the versions of a file will be included in the search and is there an integrated tool to compare different versions?
  • Is it intelligent enough to give the desired result on the first search result unlike koders that does text search and returns a big set of results?
