Changing Trends – CMS Migration with Intermediate Solution

In recent times, I came across few situations where client need to move from their hosted CMS environment to another CMS environment due to issues like scalability, performance, global strategy etc. What has been amazing is clients are looking for intermediate solutions before migrating to new CMS environments. They look for migrating existing solution to either an open source environment, or changing to static site for few months. How does it help them? Is it a good approach? Here is my thoughts on it:

Positive:

  • Client get a chance to clean up their website
  • A chance to bring things in-house, if maintained by external Service Provider, thus saving $$$
  • Even sometimes License cost is saved which could easily drive intermediate solution
  • Makes migration to actual CMS environment easier since all the loose ends are known in advance
  • Learning’s from intermediate migration could lead to a better CMS solution

Negative:

  • Intermediate solution might not provide flexibility as the existing system
  • Static site makes maintainability pretty tough
  • Might take longer time than expected thus defeat the purpose
  • Bigger risk
  • More effort and cost – training and maintenance
